Course Description:
Government and public policy impact every part of our lives, from shaping public school curriculum to protecting our country from national security threats. However, American public policy is also special for its participatory nature. Every citizen has the right and the duty to steer our country through voting, advocacy, and more. This course is intended to uncover the complexities of our national government and give students tangible skills to impact societal change. The course will cover the institutional structure of federal
government and major debates on topics like foreign policy and healthcare.
Beyond instilling critical values of civic responsibility, studying public policy helps you to build skills in research, argumentation, writing, and public speaking. These skills will help you stand out among your peers in a variety of academic and professional contexts. Furthermore, public policy knowledge allows you to connect with politicians, pursue interesting internships, and start advocacy initiatives. The teacher is to provide you the basics, support you in connecting your other interests to public policy, and help you develop the technical tools and knowledge for future success. Over the course of this class, teacher will help you find entry points and create initial materials to positively impact your communities such as introducing public policy organizations, sharing experiences with related extracurriculars, and writing Letters to the Editor for future submission in media publications.
